Fostering a dog is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it comes with challenges, especially
in the first few days. If you’re considering fostering, here are some essential tips to help you and your new pal adjust!

The First Night: What to Expect
The first night with a foster dog can be tough. All dogs feel a little anxious in a new home, and
it’s normal for them to be restless through the night. Don’t get discouraged! By night three or
four, most dogs will begin to settle into their new routine and feel more comfortable.
Let Their Personality Shine
Rather than immediately diving into obedience training, allow your new friend to have some time
to show their personality. This helps you provide adopters with valuable insight into their
strengths and challenges. Of course, you should intervene if they behave badly, but don’t expect
perfection from day one. Many young dogs may pull on the leash, chew on household items, or
have occasional accidents indoors. Noting these behaviors will better prepare adopters for what
to expect.
Time Commitment & Lifestyle Considerations
Spending at least two hours a day playing with your foster dog is best. However, if you work
full-time, don’t worry—you can still foster! We will match you with a dog that fits your schedule.
Even without a fenced yard, fostering is possible with supervised outdoor time and leash walks!
Common Health & Safety Considerations
Since many foster dogs come from shelters, some may require medication. If you have personal
pets, ensure they are vaccinated and healthy before introducing them to a foster dog.
Final Thoughts
Fostering saves lives, and while it can be challenging at times, the rewards far outweigh the
difficulties. By providing love, structure, and care, you’re helping a dog transition from a shelter
to a loving home. If you’re considering fostering, embrace the process, stay patient, and enjoy
the experience of making a difference in a dog’s life!
